Why Electrical Engineering? My decision to major in Electrical Engineering was inspired by my desire to improve security through technology. Thanks to the influence of my cousin, who now studies Autonomous Systems, I developed an interest in electrical engineering. In the future: work with large companies or on national security. Why Gender and Sexuality Studies? My interest in Gender and Sexuality Studies was sparked in my eighth grade Civics class when we studied topics pertaining to sexual equality.

I went into the class knowing I believed women had a right to make choices for their own bodies and that view remained the same, but I discovered the complexity of abortion debates. I challenged myself by thinking about the disparity between actual and potential personhood and the moral rights of unconscious lives. If pregnancy had the same consequences for men as it does women, how might the debate be different? Would this debate even exist? On my first shift, I watched an incarcerated woman receive a postpartum exam after giving birth in her cell toilet with just Advil, and the issues discussed in Civics suddenly became urgent and real.

My school projects have often focused on reproductive rights. The interdisciplinary nature of this major will allow me to investigate many other areas of study and create a more nuanced understanding of how this particular field interacts with our world and society. Outline - Why Gender and Sexuality Studies:. Imagine all the stars in the universe. The brain has a thousand times the number of synapses, making neurological errors a near certainty. I learned this fact firsthand as a 14 year-old, when I suffered from sleepless nights because of an uncomfortable, indescribable feeling in my leg.

It took months of appointments and tests to be told it was a condition called cortical dysplasia. Even after the diagnosis, there is no cure. I am lucky. My condition does not severely affect my quality of life. However, I know this is not the case for everyone. After this experience, I took AP Biology and attended a neuroscience program, which reinforced the subject as my future calling. One of the most impactful lectures discussed the plight of healthcare in developing nations. Newborns with extreme neurological deficits are common, but finding treatments is not. Without prenatal care, this is becoming a growing epidemic, leaving millions of children helpless. With a degree in neuroscience, I will gain a strong understanding of neural tube development and neuronal migration in infants.

I will then become a neurologist, specializing in pediatric care. I hope to work for humanitarian organizations, such as Doctors Without Borders, in Africa, where HIV and polio are rampant, as are numerous other diseases. Imagine the stars once more. From across the world, I will look at the same stars in the future, as I help children secure the ability to not only look at the stars, but do much more. Hook: Connect number of stars to number of connections in brain and maybe mention cortical dysplasia. If possible, connect them. Describing areas of interest is still a good idea.

It shows your intellectual curiosity and demonstrates your ability to make connections across a range of academic disciplines. It works like this:. This structure was inspired by an article by Andy Raskin in which he analyzes a pitch Elon Musk gave on the Powerwall. But at the end, his audience cheers. For a battery. Step 1: Identify the problem. Describe the challenge you were or are currently facing. The problem could be something global, like an environmental issue, or something more local, like a lack of creative opportunities in your high school.

Step 2: Raise the stakes. Help us understand: Why was or is overcoming this challenge important? What might happen if this problem went or goes unchecked? Step 3: Describe what you did. Tell us the specific things you or you and your team did to solve the problem. Step 4: Clarify your role. Describe your particular involvement. Step 5: Share the impact you had, lessons you learned, or values you gained. Provide specific evidence that gives us a sense that your work mattered. The Catalyzing Creativity Club. I live in the suburb of Los Angeles, California, known to its residents as the bubble. It has the perfect weather, location, and schools. As amazing as it sounds, however, growing up in La Cañada Flintridge has its drawbacks: the community pressures adolescents to achieve success through mainly academic means.

Sophomore year, my friends and I began to wonder, What if the teenagers of La Cañada had greater opportunities to express themselves. To pursue their creativity. To follow their dreams. Founded two years ago, the Catalyzing Creativity Club C3, for short , provides students in our community the opportunity to pursue their passion and aspirations outside the classroom. In addition, we have a blog for aspiring writers to publish their work and are holding a shoe drive for underprivileged athletes. As vice president of finances for C3, I work to ensure we can fund these activities. I handle our bank account, fundraising, and organize the event planning.

This role is crucial, as we work to achieve non-profit status. Even though C3 is only a few years old, I believe it is already making an impact in the community. As we grow and the opportunities we provide become more popular, our hope is to inspire our peers to follow their dreams and burst the La Cañada Flintridge bubble. I love how direct the tone is in the third paragraph. This was pulled directly from the bullet points of his BEABIES exercise. It works. Doing this helps us understand that he was more than just a passive member who showed up to meetings.

Another potential use of your extracurricular essay is to expand on something you only mentioned briefly in your personal statement. But again, not every essay has to be perfect and not every element has to be included in order for this structure to work. This prompt and those like it ask students to discuss their backgrounds, identities, interests, or talents and tell the reader why these are meaningful to them. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. So guess what? You can totally use the resources linked above, in particular the free guide.

Why am I sending you to those links instead of spelling it out here? A Chinese American with accented Chinese, a Florida-born Texan, a first generation American with a British passport: no label fits me without a caveat. I even spend my free time doing nonograms, grid-based logic puzzles solved by using clues to fill in seemingly random pixels to create a picture. It started when I was a kid. One day, my dad captured my fickle kindergartner attention a herculean feat and taught me Sudoku. As he explained the rules, those mysterious scaffoldings of numbers I often saw on his computer screen transformed into complex structures of logic built by careful strategy.

From then on, I wondered if I could uncover the hidden order behind other things in my life. In elementary school, I began to recognize patterns in the world around me: thin, dark clouds signaled rain, the moon changed shape every week, and the best snacks were the first to go. I wanted to know what unseen rules affected these things and how they worked. My parents, both pipeline engineers, encouraged this inquisitiveness and sometimes tried explaining to me how they solved puzzles in their own work. In high school, I studied by linking concepts across subjects as if my coursework was another puzzle to solve. PEMDAS helped me understand appositive phrases, and the catalysts for revolutions resembled chemical isotopes, nominally different with the same properties. As I grew older, my interests expanded to include the delicate systems of biology, the complexity of animation, and the nuances of language.

I was and remain voracious for the new and unusual, spending hours entrenched in Wikipedia articles on obscure topics, i. classical ciphers or dragons, and analyzing absurdist YouTube videos. Unsurprisingly, like pilot fish to their sharks, my career aspirations followed my varied passions: one day I wanted to be an illustrator, the next a biochemist, then a stand-up comedian. When it came to narrowing down the choices, narrowing down myself, I felt like nothing would satisfy my ever-fluctuating intellectual appetite. But when I discovered programming, something seemed to settle. In computer science, I had found a field where I could be creative, explore a different type of language, and yes solve puzzles.

Even when lines of red error messages fill my console, debugging offered me the same thrill as a particularly good puzzle. While to others my life may seem like a jumble of incompatible fragments, like a jigsaw puzzle, each piece connects to become something more. However, there are still missing pieces at the periphery: experiences to have, knowledge to gain, bad jokes to tell. Someday I hope to solve the unsolvable. This author first brainstormed her content using the 21 Details exercise and the "Everything I Want Colleges to Know About Me" List. As she did that, she noticed that some parts of her seemed to contradict.

She decided to use this as a thematic thread for her essay, and brainstormed other specific details that showed other contrasts. Yup, like a Super Essay. For more essays by students who expressed their uniqueness well in their essays, click here. This is the type of challenge-based essay I discuss in the free guide , and which I call the Type A and Type C essays. Want the short version of the guide? Want the even shorter version? Here are six questions to answer in your essay:. What was the impact on your life not emotions, which come next, but external effects? Not sure how these six questions can lead to an essay? Does every life matter? Because it seems like certain lives matter more than others, especially when it comes to money. I remember overhearing intense conversations outside the headquarters tent.

My dad and his friend were arguing that we should treat the woman regardless of the treatment cost, whereas the others were arguing that it simply cost too much to treat her. Looking back, it was a conflict between ideals—one side argued that everyone should receive treatment whereas the other argued that interventions should be based on cost-effectiveness. I was angry for two reasons. First, because my father lost the argument. In short, that every life matters. Over the next four years I read piles of books on social justice and global health equity in order to prove my intuitive belief in a logical manner.

I even took online courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. But I failed to find a clear, logical argument for why every life mattered. I did, however, find sound arguments for the other side, supporting the idea that society should pursue the well-being of the greatest number, that interventions should mitigate the most death and disability per dollar spent. But I continued searching, even saving up pocket money to attend a summer course on global health at Brown University. I searched my memories. Why was I convinced that every life mattered? When the woman with MDR-TB came to our team, she brought along with her a boy that looked about my age.

Six years have passed since I met him, but I still remember the gaze he gave me as he left with his mother. It was, in a way, serene. It was almost as if he knew this was coming. That burdened me. This author decided to use a compelling question as his hook. He describes the many steps he took and he did a lot! to try to answer the question. This shows his tenacity. But, again, he never fully answers it. This demonstrates vulnerability. Many essays tie things up in a neat little bow. In this case, there is no bow. Instead, the author explores the complexities surrounding this question, which shows his ability to embrace nuance. The key here was finding a compelling question.

It works, plus allowed him a chance to name a few other values that were important to him: health, liberty, and equity. Watch the Feelings and Needs Exercise , and use it to Both the Type A and Type B essays I mention in the free guide would answer this prompt. My mother came to the U. from Mexico to study English. But she fell in love and eloped with the man that eventually became my father. He loved her in an unhealthy way, and was both physically and verbally abusive. My mother lacked the courage to start over so she stayed with him and slowly let go of her dreams and aspirations. In the summer before my junior year I was offered a scholarship to study abroad in Egypt.

Not to my surprise, my father refused to let me go. I accepted the scholarship. I continued to roam throughout Egypt, exploring the Great Pyramids of Giza, cruising on the Nile, and traveling to Luxor and Aswan. And before I returned to the U. I received the unexpected opportunity to travel to London and Paris. It was surreal: a girl from the ghetto traveling alone around the world with a map in her hands And no man or cultural standards could dictate what I was to do. I rode the subway from Cambridge University to the British Museum.

I took a train from London to Paris and in two days I visited the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, and took a cruise on the Seine. Despite the language barrier I found I had the self-confidence to approach anyone for directions. While I was in Europe enjoying my freedom, my mother moved out and rented her own place. We were proud of each other. And she vicariously lived through my experiences as I sent her pictures and told her about my adventures. I currently live in the U. S with my mother. My father has gradually transformed from a frigid man to the loving father I always yearned for. We plan and execute school dances and create effective donation letters.

After the political turmoil of the Arab Spring many Middle Eastern countries refuse to grant women equal positions in society because that would contradict Islamic texts. I believe these Islamic texts have been misinterpreted throughout time, and my journey towards my own independence has inspired me to help other women find liberation as well. My Easter will drastically differ from past years. Rather than being locked at home, my mother and I will celebrate outdoors our rebirth and renewal. Ensure it reads well. Poem analysis essay writing guide with detailed example from team at essaybasics. I believe in this philosophy since it describes the various health and caring related issues and problems in a very different light. I also believe that it is important for the nurses to understand their own selves so that they are able to better treat their patients. I believe that spirituality holds a very significant role in the profession of nursing. In fact, the care of the soul is the most powerful aspect of the art of caring in nursing. I have a very unique outlook on health. I think of "health" as being the simple absence of disease in the body.

The health of the person includes the harmony and the balance between the mind, body, and soul of a person. Thus, I believe that all patients should be told good and nice things about their health and this would enable them to feel good about themselves and feel better and cured. This is my philosophy, and one that I hope to practice when I am a professional nurse. I think nursing not only includes taking care of patients and helping out the doctors. I believe that there is some art to nursing as well, other than all the education and science involved of course. I believe that that caring is the essence of nursing, and that it should be viewed by the nurses as their moral ideal of preserving human dignity. This is to be done by helping the patients in finding some deeper meaning to their illnesses and suffering so that they are able to understand themselves better and are able to restore and promote their personal harmony and balance between the mind, body, and soul.

Thus, I believe that nurses have to be consciously engaged in caring for the patients if they are to connect and establish relationships that work to promote their health and healing. Need a similar essay on nursing? We can help. Place an order for custom essay. Customer Login.

The initial type of appraisal was by the marks where the marks for all the questions were totaled to get grand total marks. There are many people who declare there are many advantages of the modern education system and there are also others who say the complete opposite. Well, both sides have a fair share of arguments to support their views completely.

School is a sacrosanct place and is touted to be the second home of children. Today in the rapid life that we are living in, most of the parents are office goers and school becomes a safe haven to leave their children behind and go. Thus, schools play an essential part in the wholesome and the holistic development of each and every student they have got enrolled with, grading system essay. It does not merely perform as an intermediate in which the children study and imbibe new things and habits but, they also are depicted to the actual world where they get to interrelate with their landed gentry and learn many things through understanding which nothing else can provide. The main reason for the schools to exist in the world is to impart knowledge to the students who are studying in it and assessing the students thereby forms a vital part of the performance of the school which is usually carried as a two-way method. Here, in this article, we are going to look in detail at the various dimensions of the grading systems in the field of education and the various advantages and disadvantages of grading system in education. Source: wes, grading system essay. Source : fulbright. This spares the students from getting preoccupied and become fussy about getting an elevated letter grade like grading system essay of an Oand permitting them to unwind. It still provides the necessary educational prerequisites for them to land themselves comfortably on a good job and also mold themselves to become more responsible citizens in the future.

An even better aspect is that they will also receive some credit for the course that they have studied for all these years in the past. One of the main advantages of this method is that the studious children are clearly discriminated from the average and below-average type of students but this led to the development and mounting up of intense pressure amidst the students. The learning was not thought of a process that is revered to be a fun task, but rather as a hard task which they had to properly deal with in an obedient manner. The advantages of the grading system are that the development of pressure upon the students in terms of studying has appreciably reduced.

Earlier the marks that were obtained in the exams are the only indicator of whether a child is studying or not. But, this system analyzes whether a child understands the concept or not.

Knowing precisely grading system essay subject s are their weak spots, students can easily decide where to toggle their focal point on. In a grading system where the alphabets are the scales, a grade of C or grade of D is known to speak a lot. you have read it right, grading system essay. Suppose if a student knows that getting a D is enough to scrape through the class assignments section in the marking division, he or she will only focus on getting a D without any fuss. The point is that the student does not need to toil them to achieve the necessary minimum, grading system essay.

Classes or the courses that are often taught in a classroom medium within the confined premises of a school are highly difficult and are taken in the ultimate sense as getting a pass or a fail on a subject, grading system essay. This builds a sense of responsibility in their minds to work and train hard in their weak spots. Also, the following points can be considered as worthy of our importance while considering the disadvantages of the grading system in education. They are. When all that required is a mere pass mark, we would neither have the urge to outperform others nor do we want to excel with the overall grades. The A grade speaks a lot about our caliber than a D or an F, grading system essay. With a D or an F, we can be only satisfied that we are okay enough in studies, which will make us go lazy.

As we have said already, grading system essay, passing in an examination cannot be considered as plausible enough to declare that the same student has gained an immense amount of knowledge by these exams. Suppose, let us consider that the science subject is your weak point and with a tremendous effort, let us say that you got an A or a C for all your attempts, which would have made a vast disparity in your sense of accomplishment, grading system essay. Still, the inner knowledge you have gained via these grades can be nil, as you may have attempted for learning without understanding the concept, with the sole perspective of getting an A or a C. The traditional letter grade system considers that every alphabet is an inducement to perform good or better or the best. Getting a B could kindle the students to put an extra effort to get an Grading system essay and is a step closer to getting the highest mark in a class.

But, the highest rank in the class tag is going to do no good for the students. To get the tag, the students will only go for rote learning rather than be exploring and explaining the concepts on their own. The fact that a student scores a centum without any mistakes and a student who scores 90 replete with several mistakes grouped together can make the centum holder get de-motivated. This will dampen the grading system essay of the hard worker to get mediocre grades itself, grading system essay, as he or she will know that irrespective of the grades, they are going to be placed in the cream students section only.

Moreover, grading system essay, the responsibility now lies grading system essay the subject teacher and their candid estimation of a particular student who is sent for the overall grading rather than estimating the true merit and caliber of that student. Thus, grading system essay, these are the unfair advantages that this system poses while considering it as an able system to motivate the students in order to perform better. The disadvantages of grading system thus include the piece of information that the students cannot be distinguished with respect grading system essay the fellow ones as more than two students with different capabilities in terms of their understanding and grasping power and prowess will automatically fall into the same group. Thus a teacher will not be able to know which person needs more special attention than the other.

Even though there are several disadvantages of the grading system it has removed several disadvantages of the marking system. As a recent survey has shown that with the advent of the grading system in education, the number of students who give importance to education has got drastically reduced as this notion stems from the fact that the grades are a fleeting sort of thing and are able to fetch only in the short-term and have no use in the long run. Especially when these students appear to college entrance grading system essay with these grades and a nil amount of knowledge, these grades will not speak on behalf of them. Grades without knowledge is like a batsman going to a cricket field without a bat to play a cricket match.

In the same way, the schools grading system essay also come forward to implement some changes in their already designed curriculum to make the students get proactive in order to learn in a meaningful way so that the concept remains with them all through their life. As long as schools carry on to allocate their grades, grading system essay, with non-meaningful consequences, grading system essay, like a class rank or a top to down scorer method or any other namesake methods, grading system essay, fastened to them, students will keep on believing that the grades are the ultimate purpose of studying. If we start implementing these issues right from today, we can see a wholesome and fully knowledgeable student community within a few years and after which there will only be a competition for soft skills and intensity of knowledge and nothing else.

Diagnosis may occur as the result of presenting complaints that cause a patient to seek medical help, or diagnosis may occur when routine check-ups lead to a suspicion by a physician or a laboratory specialist that a more thorough investigation is indicated. diversity of learning styles and needs represented in a typical 21st century classroom. As the United States continues to see an increase in multi-ethnic, multinational populations, the children of immigrants that bring diverse cultures and ethnicities to American shores are represented in the classroom. This presents a serious challenge for the educator, since the diversity of students reflect a wide range of competencies, skills and levels of intellectual comprehension. Within the context of that diversity the instructor must embrace a pivotal 21st century learning challenge -- meeting the learning needs of students who may fall behind without one-on-one instruction and the learning needs of more advanced students seeking to surge ahead while many students in the classroom may be struggling simply to stay up with the assignments.

Contract learning is a form of learning and teaching that involves the student or mentee far more than usual in the formulation of assignments and curriculum. The teacher and student work together to come up with a series of assignments that the student agrees to complete, thus tailoring the course to their specific needs while giving them more motivation to complete the assigned tasks.

Like any relatively recent development in education, contract learning has its supporters and detractors, and is likely not useful in every situation. However, contract learning has been successfully deployed in the nursing field, because it allows nurses and nurses-in-training to organize their own learning regimens and tailor their experience to their own learning needs. Classes or the courses that are often taught in a classroom medium within the confined premises of a school are highly difficult and are taken in the ultimate sense as getting a pass or a fail on a subject. This builds a sense of responsibility in their minds to work and train hard in their weak spots. Also, the following points can be considered as worthy of our importance while considering the disadvantages of the grading system in education.

They are,. When all that required is a mere pass mark, we would neither have the urge to outperform others nor do we want to excel with the overall grades. The A grade speaks a lot about our caliber than a D or an F. With a D or an F, we can be only satisfied that we are okay enough in studies, which will make us go lazy. As we have said already, passing in an examination cannot be considered as plausible enough to declare that the same student has gained an immense amount of knowledge by these exams. Suppose, let us consider that the science subject is your weak point and with a tremendous effort, let us say that you got an A or a C for all your attempts, which would have made a vast disparity in your sense of accomplishment. Still, the inner knowledge you have gained via these grades can be nil, as you may have attempted for learning without understanding the concept, with the sole perspective of getting an A or a C.

The traditional letter grade system considers that every alphabet is an inducement to perform good or better or the best. Getting a B could kindle the students to put an extra effort to get an A and is a step closer to getting the highest mark in a class.

This will dampen the spirits of the hard worker to get mediocre grades itself, as he or she will know that irrespective of the grades, they are going to be placed in the cream students section only. Moreover, the responsibility now lies on the subject teacher and their candid estimation of a particular student who is sent for the overall grading rather than estimating the true merit and caliber of that student. Thus, these are the unfair advantages that this system poses while considering it as an able system to motivate the students in order to perform better. The disadvantages of grading system thus include the piece of information that the students cannot be distinguished with respect to the fellow ones as more than two students with different capabilities in terms of their understanding and grasping power and prowess will automatically fall into the same group.

Especially when these students appear to college entrance examinations with these grades and a nil amount of knowledge, these grades will not speak on behalf of them.

Grades without knowledge is like a batsman going to a cricket field without a bat to play a cricket match. In the same way, the schools should also come forward to implement some changes in their already designed curriculum to make the students get proactive in order to learn in a meaningful way so that the concept remains with them all through their life. As long as schools carry on to allocate their grades, with non-meaningful consequences, like a class rank or a top to down scorer method or any other namesake methods, fastened to them, students will keep on believing that the grades are the ultimate purpose of studying. If we start implementing these issues right from today, we can see a wholesome and fully knowledgeable student community within a few years and after which there will only be a competition for soft skills and intensity of knowledge and nothing else.

Letter grades are based on an interval kind of measurement, wherein a broad range of grades are categorized under a letter grade 'representative. can range from a numerical grade percentage of One of the advantages of using letter grades is that it is prevalently used among schools and educational institutions, and has been the norm in most grading systems used by instructors and students. However, the letter grading system has its flaws that make it problematic and an inaccurate and unreliable measure of student performance evaluation. Letter grades are an inaccurate form of grading since it is interval-based in grading, and there is an unfair distribution of equal grades to students who have different levels of performance and knowledge.

Thus, the determined grade does not fully reflect the student's abilities and knowledge. Another grading system that is commonly used in other educational systems is the numerical grading system, wherein percentages are used to measure student performance. This has an advantage of being more accurate than letter grades, but it is prone to becoming inconsistent, therefore, unreliable, since computing grades by percentages can be tedious and has a great margin of error when calculated. Because of the numerous calculations instructors have to make to compute the individual grades of the students, numerical grades present a problem of being costly and time-consuming. Also, since most people are already accustomed to the letter grading system, it might take time for students and instructors to use this kind of grading system.

However, the numerical grades provide a clear gauge of student performance evaluation, since it states in determined numerical values what the student's grade is, and from this grade percentage will come a reflection of how well the student performed and what the student's standing is in the instructor's class MCPS The third kind of grading system is in narrative form. In this system, the letter and numerical grades are both utilized in determining the grade of a student. These forms of grading have their own advantages and disadvantages, as outlined in the preceding discussion.

Although grading seems to be the most adequate method to measure and determine student performance in school, there are also critics of the grading system that seeks for its abolishment. One of these critics is Paul Goodman, author of an essay entitled, "A Proposal to Abolish Grading. These outlined reasons are in some degree true of what is happening in the present educational system of the society, but these contentions cannot be generalized too quickly. It is true that increased pressure from peers and instructors to increase a student's grade can prompt the student to commit plagiarism, cheating, or any form of dishonesty, but the need to increase student's grade can also challenge and motivate a student to study harder and perform well in school, which is exactly what happens to well-motivated individuals.

In the second contention, grades may be countered as an insufficient measure of student performance in school, but the grades reflect how the student was able to perform and use his knowledge and skills while in the school environment. Thus, to provide future employers a copy of the student's grades would be equivalent to providing them with a quick 'summary' of how well the student performed under the conditions and environment of educational institutions which is a preparatory stage for a life full of pressure, time- and effort-demanding task -- the workplace. Thus, with all the perspectives discussed about grading for and against…. References Godolphin, Barry. Goodman, Paul.
